A major milestone reached in Kariobangi, Kenya

Kariobangi is a low-income neighbourhood in northeastern Nairobi, Kenya. The area consists of a mix of apartment buildings and informal settlements.

For the past few years, Engineers Without Borders Sweden has worked alongside our local partner, Asulma Centre, to make quality education more accessible for children in the underserved neighbourhood of Kariobangi, Nairobi. Today, we are proud to share an important milestone that brings this vision one step closer to reality.

Kariobangi is a low-income neighbourhood on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya, where more than 100,000 people live with limited access to basic services. One of the greatest challenges is the severe shortage of public schools, leaving many children without the opportunity to receive a quality education and build a brighter future.

A Long-Term Local Partnership

For years, the grassroots organisation Asulma Centre Self Help Group has worked to address poverty, social injustice, illiteracy and drug abuse in the community. Today, its educational activities are spread across several rented facilities, creating financial strain, logistical challenges and an environment that is not ideal for students.

Together with Asulma Centre, Engineers Without Borders Sweden is working to establish a safe, affordable and high-quality school that can serve the community for generations to come. Alongside the school project, we have also developed a solar cooking initiative that will reduce reliance on charcoal and firewood, improving both environmental sustainability and human health.

One Campus, Greater Impact

Our vision is to create a purpose-built campus where the school and the Integrated Solar Cooking business operate side by side. This integrated approach will not only provide quality education for up to 500 children but also strengthen long-term sustainability and create lasting benefits for the local community.

An Important Step Forward

We are excited to announce that the land for the future school has finally been secured!

This achievement is the result of years of determination, strong local leadership and close collaboration. Securing the land marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter and provides the foundation needed to move the project forward.

The next step is to secure funding for construction and transform the plans into a fully functioning school. Together with Asulma Centre, we look forward to continuing this journey and creating opportunities that will benefit children and families for generations to come.

Support the project and help make the school a reality.
