Sanitation Solution for Karagwe Schools

IMG_7254.jpeg

At schools in the rural Karagwe District of North-Western Tanzania, toilets and sanitation facilities are often of a low quality and lacking in privacy. This has been found to cause students to avoid attending school, especially girls during their menstrual cycle. Apart from spreading disease, the lack of access to quality sanitation therefore also leads to gender inequalities and a loss of education opportunities. In order to combat this issue, EWB and Sandvik are cooperating with Mavuno Project to construct sustainable and user-friendly toilet facilities at rural schools which have been identified as having the most pressing need. Sandvik is funding the project and contributing with relevant expertise from its employees, while EWB and Mavuno Project are contributing with their wealth of experience from development projects in the Karagwe District. The project aims to tackle several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
